The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA): What’s Changed for the Clean Vehicle Credit?

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), signed into law in 2025, made major changes to the clean vehicle tax credits. Here’s what you need to know:

What Was the Clean Vehicle Credit? The Clean Vehicle Credit provided a tax credit for people who bought new clean vehicles, like electric cars. The credit could be up to $7,500, depending on the vehicle’s battery and where it was made.

What Did OBBBA Change? The OBBBA ended the clean vehicle credit much earlier than expected. Under the new law, you can no longer claim the credit for any new clean vehicle acquired after September 30, 2025. This is a big change from the previous rule, which allowed the credit through 2032.

Key Points:

  • No More Credit After September 30, 2025: If you buy a new electric or other clean vehicle after this date, you won’t get the tax credit.
  • Other Clean Vehicle Credits Also Ended: The OBBBA also ended credits for used clean vehicles and commercial clean vehicles after September 30, 2025.
  • No Phase-Out: The credit doesn’t gradually decrease—it just stops for vehicles acquired after the cutoff date.

What Does This Mean for You? If you purchase a new electric vehicle after September 30, 2025, there is no tax break available to you.
